What’s up, guys? I can’t believe October is almost over! It’s finally getting cold outside, and I couldn’t be more excited. We went to the mountains last week and I took quite a few photos of fall leaves, pumpkins, and other autumn-y things. Prepare for those in an upcoming post. XD
Let’s get started, shall we?
Random Topic #1: Alternatives to PicMonkey
As most of you have probably noticed, PicMonkey is no longer free to use. *sniff* I’ve mostly recovered from shock by now, but I can assure you I was quite unhappy when I first found out. XD You can go read THIS POST on the PicMonkey blog where they explain it. You can design and edit on the site all you want, but there is no longer a free way to save your creations. 😦 Because of this, I’ve come up with a list of free alternatives to PicMonkey. Hopefully it will be helpful to some of you!
There are a ton of free photo editing sites out there. While a lot of them can’t really do much but put colorful filters on your photos, I managed to find a couple that can do everything PicMonkey could do – and more!
Out of all of these sites, I think Pixlr and BeFunky are my favorites! They both have a ton of free editing options that are quite nice.
PicMonkey was unique in the sense that you could use your own fonts on their site for free. I did my best to find a few other sites that also offer that feature. 🙂
As you can see, I couldn’t find near as many sites for graphic design. Of course, there’s always Canva, but I tend to shy away from Canva because the free fonts and clipart are so overused. I personally have started using GIMP for all my editing and design, and I really love it! However, if you’d rather go with a something simpler that GIMP, then I would recommend Pixlr as my top choice for a graphic design site. 🙂
Random Topic #2: NaNoWriMo
I’m attempting NaNo for the first time this year! I’ve set a goal of 25K words, and I hope I’ll be able to meet it. Do all you seasoned NaNo-ers have any tips for me? I really have no idea what I’m doing here. XD
I don’t want to give away much about my novel, but I can tell you a few things: it’s set in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in the year 2004, the two main characters are a 13-year old girl named Lem (short for Clementine) and a 9-year-old boy named Nat (his name may change), and it’s sort of a blend between historical fiction and sci-fi. Here’s a cover that I made:
Yeah, it doesn’t have a title yet. XD I’m super excited to write this novel! I really love writing and I think NaNo is such a neat idea. 😀
Random Topic #3: Photography Challenge
In my last recent photography post, Allison challenged me to think of three really ugly things and then try and take beautiful pictures of them. I thought it was a super neat idea, so I decided to try it! I wandered around with my camera for a while and managed to find some unappealing photography subjects. 😛
Here’s a lovely dead beetle, a rusty metal rod, and some decade-old grain on the floor of our unused grain silo. So beautiful. XD
This spider web was stretched across the doorway of the silo. I’m not sure if this photo qualifies as ugly because I think spider webs are beautiful! I seem to have a somewhat unpopular opinion on spiders, though. 😛
Our rose bush is very brown and leafless right now, so it’s pretty ugly. The thorns on the branches do make for a somewhat interesting subject, though!
I had a lot of fun with that challenge! How do you think I did? If any of you want to try it, then please go right ahead. 😀
Random Topic #4: Introducing an Awesome Blog That Deserves More Followers
I shall now give a shout out to a blog that I think deserves more attention. 😀 There are just so many amazing bloggers out there that deserve way more recognition than they get!
The blog I’ll be giving a shout out to today is:
Please check out this blog, follow, like, and comment! It’s a collab blog that I’m actually a contributor to, and I would really appreciate if y’all followed. Also, please leave links in the comments to some blogs that you think deserve a shoutout!
Random Topic #5: Recent Artwork
I actually haven’t done much art lately, other than a few bible verses on Sunday mornings. I recently bought a Wreck This Journal, but I want to save that for another post. 🙂 I have done a few drawings in my sketchbook, so I guess I shall share those. 😛
I did this sketch of Poseidon on Percy Jackson’s birthday. It’s not my best drawing ever, but it’s okay. I was laying on my bedroom floor while I drew it, and I heard my mom say, “Where is Clara?” Then my brother came in, looked over my shoulder, went back to my mom, and said, “She’s laying on the floor drawing some weird water guy.” XD
I bought some new brush-tip markers at Hobby Lobby, and I drew these little flowers when I was testing them out. I love how vibrant and colorful they are!
Yikes, I probably should have put something underneath this page – you can see the next drawing right through the paper! Anyways, this is a sketch of a character from a book that my sister was reading called If The Magic Fits. 🙂
That’s all for my recent art! I really should draw more often, huh? 😉
Random Topic #6: Comment-A-Thon?
Do any of you remember the last Comment-A-Thon? I kind of want to do one again since the last two got a good bit of attention and participants. What do y’all think? Also, I’m not sure I like the name “Comment-A-Thon” that much. Any suggestions for alternative names, or do you think I should stick with the one I have now?
Random Topic #7: Some Amazing Videos
I discovered two really incredible videos on YouTube lately that I wanted to share. 😀 (Also, you should all check out Studio C because it is hilarious. XD)
Here’s the first video:
Isn’t that just beautiful? I love the animation style so much! ❤
And the second one:
I’ve watched this three times. XD I just can’t get over how amazing it is! Her Instagram account (which you can see here) is really incredible. 😀
Random Topic #8: Maude Wearing Glasses
So. I was really bored the other day, and I decided to try to teach Maude to wear a pair of glasses. Why I thought of this, I don’t know. XD Anyways, I found an old pair of glasses and made a strap out of a headband to help hold them on her head, and then I headed outside to attempt to get her to wear them. The result was about 100 blurry pictures of Maude trying to remove the glasses from her face. I picked a few of the most hilarious ones to show you guys:
“What do you have there, human? That doesn’t look like a treat…. oh, great. You’ve got your camera.”
“Hey… wait.. what are you doing?”
“Ahh! I CAN’T SEE!”
“Hmm… I do look pretty fabulous in these.”
“Ahh, there we go. Now take your picture and get these things off me, human.”
I rewarded Maude with several treats after managing to get a decent photo. I wonder if I could get one of the bunnies to wear glasses…. hmm. XD
Random Topic #9: An Adorable Puppy
When we went up to visit my grandparents last week, we stopped at a scenic overlook to see the beautiful mountains. AND THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE WITH A PUPPY:
It was a 14-week-old ball of squishiness and fluff.
Her owners kindly allowed me to take a picture of her. She looked right at the camera and smiled. I love when dogs do that!
Just look at that face! *melts* I’m pretty sure she was a Shar-Pei dog. Her face was so wrinkly! XD
I think I need a puppy now. Is anyone willing to donate one? *hopeful smile*
Well, that’s about it for this post! Thank you so much for reading. 😀 I hope you all have a wonderful day! ❤
