Summer Goals {2018}

What’s up, everyone? I hope you’re all having a great day!

I don’tΒ know about you guys, but I am so excited for summer. It hasn’t officially arrived yet, but it’s 90 degrees where I live, so I think it’s safe to say that summer has begun. πŸ˜‰ There are quite a few things that I’m hoping to accomplish over the next few months, and I decided to write them all out and make a post about them. I hope you enjoy reading my summer goals, and don’t forget to tell me what your goals are in the comments below! πŸ™‚

Reach day 190 of a Fiddle Tune a Day:

In an attempt to expand the number of fiddle songs that I know and just to generally improve my fiddle playing, I started learning and playing a daily fiddle song back in March. I’ve been following Vi Wickam’s “Fiddle Tune a Day” series on YouTube, and it’s been so helpful! Each day, I learn the song he plays on that day’s video, record myself playing it, and then upload the audio file to a Google Drive folder where I keep track of all the songs. I should be able to reach day 190 by the end of the summer. I can’t wait to reach day 365 next year – this has already improved my playing so much, and it’s been tons of fun!

Learn something new on the piano:

I stopped taking piano lessons a while ago, and as a result, I am extremely out of practice. I may have a possible new teacher sometime soon, but until that happens, I want to try to teach myself some new songs and try to play more often so I don’t get any more rusty than I already am. πŸ˜›

Play music with other musicians:

I love making music with other musicians, but I rarely get a chance to do so. I was going to get to play with a group of bluegrass musicians back in the spring, but it ended up not working out. I’d really love to find some people to play music with this summer, especially people who are around my age. I might not end up accomplishing this goal, but I’m definitely going to try!

Find some new music to listen to:

Last year I discovered Sleepy Man, the Coco soundtrack (incredible movie, by the way!), and CCR. This summer, I’d love to find some new music artists to listen to, especially while I impatiently wait for NEEDTOBREATHE to hurry up and release their new album. XD Suggestions in the comments would be very appreciated!

Learn to play the ukulele:

My little sister was given a ukulele at Christmas and has graciously allowed me to borrow it. I’ve learned how to tune it, I know a few basic chords, and I can play a couple of songs. I’d love to know several more songs and get better at strumming patterns by the end of the summer!

Enter some more photography contests:

I entered the HSLDA photography contest a few years back, and I recently got some of my photography published in a local college magazine, but other than that, I haven’t really entered any photography contests. I’ve found a few new ones to enter, and I’m going to keep looking for more. If you guys know of any good ones, please let me know!

Try to launch a photography business:

*hyperventilates* I’m really nervous about this, but at the same time, I really want to do it. XD I created a simple online photography portfolio a few days ago, and I’m going to be reaching out to some various different places to see if they’d be willing to host a pet photography event. Beyond that, I’m not sure what I want to do, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Wish me luck, guys!

Save money for a new camera:

I was originally planning to save for a zoom lens over the summer, but then I discovered the Nikon D7100 last week and changed my mind. XD As I’ve learned more about photography, I’ve found myself wishing that my camera had live view/better autofocus/better low light performance/etc. The D7100 has all of that and more, and especially now that I’m trying to turn my photography into a business, I’ve become determined to save enough to buy it. I probably won’t have enough money by the end of the summer, but I’m definitely going to try!

Continue shelter photography:

I’ve really enjoyed being a photographer for my local animal shelter over the past year, and I hope to continue taking pictures for them throughout the summer and long after that! It’s a really neat opportunity and it’s helped me to learn a lot about animals and photography. πŸ˜€

Plan more giveaways:

The giveaway with Creativeqube Design has been super fun, and I’d love to host some more giveaways this fall! I’m going to be reaching out to various companies to see if I can find someone willing to sponsor another giveaway for all of you awesome people. πŸ˜€

Post more DIYs:

I would love to do some more DIY posts this summer! I have lots of ideas, I just need to actually make them. XD Would any of you be interested in seeing a summer-themed version of my birthday party in a box?

Do at least 3 posts every month:

Up until a little while ago, my posting schedule was… well, nonexistent. XD I would just post whenever I felt like it, which meant my posts were oddly spaced out and sporadic. In an attempt to be more organized, I’ve been trying to aim for 3 posts a month – so far, so good! We’ll see if I can keep it up for the rest of the summer. πŸ˜‰

Stick to a schedule:

As I mentioned a moment ago, I’ve been trying to be a bit more organized with my blog. I created a virtual blog planner and planned out all of my posts until August, and I’ve been writing up my posts ahead of time and scheduling them to avoid writing them at the last minute. I’m hoping to continue doing this – it really helps!

Create more free clipart:

I would love to make some more free clipart for you guys, but I’m not sure what to create! Do you have any suggestions of things you’d like me to make? Leave them in the comments below!

Work on my novel:

I’m currently working on writing a novel, and I hope to continue figuring it out and writing it over the summer! It’s a bit of the mess at a moment, but I really like the idea, so I’m going to stick with it and attempt to turn it into something that actually resembles a novel. XD It’s a story set in the middle of summer, so the next few months will be the perfect time to work on it. πŸ™‚

Write another short story:

I love writing short stories, especially creative nonfiction, but I haven’t written one in almost a year! I’m hoping that I’ll find some inspiration for one sometime this summer. πŸ™‚

Win Camp NaNo in July:

Camp NaNo in April was SO much fun, and I can’t wait for July’s Camp! I’ll most likely be using it to work on my novel, and I’m hoping to set my goal around 20K – 25K words.

Prepare for NaNoWriMo in November:

I failed NaNoWriMo last year, and I’m hoping to do somewhat better this year. I came up with a new novel idea that I set aside for NaNo. I’m quite excited about it, and I’m hoping to organize the story a bit and figure out some of the most important details so I can focus on actually writing when November comes!

Read at least 15 books on my Goodreads TBR:

I set a goal on Goodreads to read 100 books in 2018. I’ve read over 40 books so far, and I have tons more waiting to be read, so it shouldn’t be hard to reach this goal as long as I focus on trying new books instead of re-reading Harry Potter. XD

Buy some new books:

A few of the many books that I’d love to own are Counting by 7s, Echo, Challenger Deep, The Last Dragon, and The Graveyard Book. I’m hoping to visit a used bookstore sometime soon so I can add them to my bookshelf!

Try to meet or correspond with an author:

I would absolutely LOVE to meet or at least email/write to an author that I admire. In August, there’s a big book festival in my state that a lot of authors come to, and I’m hoping that we’ll be able to go and meet some of them!

Read myΒ Bible more often:

This is a pretty simple goal – I don’t read my Bible as much as I’d like to, and I’m hoping to change that! I’m trying to read a chapter or so every morning right after I get out of bed.

Go to the beach:

I absolutely love the beach, but I haven’t been in several years. I’m really hoping that we’ll be able to visit the beach this summer – I’d love to get some pictures of the ocean and add to my seashell collection!

Visit some new places:

I love to visit places that I’ve never been before. They don’t have to be anything too incredible or exotic, I just like going somewhere new and interesting. I’d love to visit some of the restaurants and stores nearby that I’ve never been to before or even discover a new place in the woods at my home. πŸ˜€

Learn to drive:

This is probably one of my biggest goals for the summer! I’m hoping to be able to drive by August. Wish me luck, guys. O_o

Create and trade more ATCs:

I love making ATCs, but I don’t really do it that often! I’d love to make some more and trade them with my friends and siblings.

Continue drawing in my sketchbook every Sunday:

I draw a verse or song lyric that I enjoyed every Sunday in church, and I’m going to continue doing it throughout the summer. πŸ™‚ It’s a nice way to remember what the sermon was about each week while doing something creative!

Make progress on my Wreck This Journal:

My Wreck This Journal is so much fun and I would love to do as many pages as possible this summer! I’d especiallyΒ like to work on some of the more destructive and messy ones!

Practice my hand lettering:

I recently bought some new brush pens, and I’ve absolutely loved using them for hand lettering! I hope to keep practicing with them over the next few months as I attempt to improve my art. πŸ™‚

Make “A”s in my college classes:

Unfortunately, I’m not getting a break from school this summer – in fact, I’ll be taking 2 college classes. Yay. πŸ˜€ I would like to try to make good grades in both of them despite the unfortunate timing!

Be more organized:

For the past couple of months, I’ve been making daily checklists in Google Keep to hold myself accountable. It’s really helped my unorganized, spontaneous self to get things done, and I hope to continue doing so throughout the summer and beyond!

Celebrate the 4th of July:

I can’t WAIT for Independence Day – it’s one of my favorite holidays! I’m hoping to watch the same fireworks show we watched last year and possibly get some good photos. πŸ™‚

Teach Maude some new tricks:

I’ve been working on some new tricks with my dog, Maude. She’s almost 7 years old, but she’s just as smart and eager to learn as she was when she was younger! One trick that I’ve almost accomplished is “touch” (touch an object with her nose), and I’m hoping to buy a desk bell and teach her to ring it using that command. πŸ˜›

Keep my plants alive:

I recently bought three little succulents (more on them in a future post), and they’ve been living on my desk as I attempt to keep them from dying. So far they seem to be okay, but we’ll see how long they last. XD

I hope that was somewhat interesting to read! I’m looking forward to seeing how much I’ll be able to accomplish this summer. πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading, and have a lovely day! ❀

I received the Nikon D7100 for Christmas last year, and it is AMAZING!! You’ll absolutely love it. I’m still figuring things out with mine, but it’s definitely a wonderful camera to use for expanding photography skills. I wish you the best on saving towards your camera! ❀

  6. Those are great goals, Clara. I was especially interested in the music ones. My goal for the summer is to learn six or so songs, so I guess that’s not as ambitious as yours… I hope to learn more than that, though. Right now I’ve begun to learn Midnight on the Water. Do you know that one? As for playing music with other people, have you looked to see if there are any jams in your area? There is a jam every month at a local church, and we’ve gone to that sometimes. So there might be something like that where you live, too. That’s cool that you discovered Sleepy Man, because we actually have an old CD of theirs (when they were called Sleepy Man Banjo Boys). I probably don’t have any music suggestions for you, since my taste is a little different than yours (This is my favorite new CD:
That’s really cool that you’re looking to start a photography business and that you’re saving up for a new camera! I hope you’ll keep us updated. πŸ™‚ At this point I’d like to have a new lens, such as the 50 mm, but I’m not sure. Do you have any lens advice?
Also, I’m suppose to learn to drive this summer as well. I haven’t started that yet, partially because we don’t have many working vehicles. πŸ˜›
Anyway, I should probably end this very long comment now. I wish you well with all your summer goals!

    1. Thank you! πŸ™‚ Ooh, I hope your new songs go well! I don’t know Midnight on Water – I’ll have to look that one up. That’s a great idea, thanks!
That’s a really happy and neat song – the harmony is amazing! πŸ™‚
Thanks, I will be sure to keep you updated! Ooh, if you’re looking to get a new lens, I would definitely recommend the 50mm. It is absolutely fantastic, and the f1.8 aperture has really taken my photography to a new level! It’s also very light and small. One thing I will say is that being fixed at 50 mm, it’s a pretty close-up lens, which can make some scenes difficult to photograph. If you’re looking for a lens that can more easily photograph landscapes and such but that still has a small aperture, I’d recommend a 35mm lens. It’s the same price as the 50mm and seems to be really nice! πŸ™‚
Wow, good luck with driving!! Thank you so much for the comment – I hope you have a wonderful summer!

      1. Midnight on the Water is a slow, pretty waltz. Do you like waltzes? πŸ™‚
Oh, yes, I agree, the harmony on I Have it All is amazing. That’s one reason I love quartet music–because of the harmony. πŸ™‚
Yes, that’s why I’m not sure if the 50 mm is the best for me, because I do like to take landscape photos sometimes. I don’t have the money for either right now, so I doesn’t matter that much. πŸ˜‰

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Yes, I do like waltzes! I think I enjoy faster songs more, but waltzes are definitely fun to play as well!
Yeah, that makes sense. Haha, same here, but I still have quite a long list of lenses on my wishlist. πŸ˜‰

  7. I’m taking my first college class this summer too!! We can slave through summer school together. πŸ˜›
Artist suggestions… Nichole Nordeman, Francesca Battistelli, Hannah Kerr, Meredith Andrews, Jeremy Camp, Lauren Daigle, Tauren Wells, Casting Crowns, For King and Country. πŸ˜‰ Hope these help!

  8. Ooh, these are such great goals, Clara! That Fiddle Tune a Day sounds like a lot of fun! I studied violin for quite a long time (12 years, in fact) but I never did anything like that. I wish I had. I wish I could give you some music suggestions to listen to, but unfortunately, I’m just starting to discover more contemporary artists myself, thanks to Allison and Megan’s persistence. Do you listen to Switchfoot? I’m looking forward to NEEDTOBREATHE’s new album too! And wow, a photography business? THAT’S SO EXCITING. I hope it goes well for you! What exactly are you interested in – are you going to keep doing pets or are you branching out into more portrait photography? Also the D7100 looks quite nice, good luck on saving! Good luck on your novel, too. πŸ™‚ Ooh, I’d love to see a summer-themed version of your birthday party in a box! Your DIY posts are so good, I love reading them. This comment is getting SUPER long so I shall try to wrap it up. I hope driving goes well for you (don’t worry, it really isn’t hard at all) and I hope you get to the beach! I hope your summer is wonderful, and I loved reading all your goals!

    1. Thank you so much, Aria!! Wow, that’s great that you studied violin for that long – do you still play? Ha ha, I’ve discovered quite a few new songs thanks to Megan and Allison as well! Hmm, I don’t think I listen to Switchfoot much, but I have heard some of their songs. YES, I can’t wait for the NEEDTOBREATHE album!!
YES, I’m super excited about it! Your photography business was actually a big inspiration for me to start one – your pictures are so beautiful! As for what kind of photography I’m interested in – I’m really willing to try anything. Portrait, pet, and product photography are three things I have some experience in, so that’s probably what I’ll be focusing on. πŸ™‚
Thanks so much! I’m so glad you enjoy my DIY posts. πŸ˜€ Haha, don’t worry about it – long comments are my favorite ones! ❀ Thank you so much for the lovely comment, and I hope you have a wonderful summer as well!

      -Clara ❀

      1. No, I don’t. I finally stopped after getting really tired and discouraged with it. I did the same with piano, and I play piano now, so I imagine I shall pick it up again in due time…
Really? Aww, I’m so flattered! Well I really and truly hope it goes well for you! And do feel free to let me know any questions you have or if you want to bounce anything off someone who’s been there, done that…though I will admit, I’m still learning quite a lot myself! Have you taken/thinking of taking any photography courses?

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Aww, that’s too bad! I really do understand, though, and I hope you do pick it up again soon!
Thank you so much! I’ll definitely let you know if I think of any questions. πŸ˜€ Hmm, I’ve taken one photography course, but I don’t think it helped me much because it was more about just how to use the settings my camera than anything else. So I might take another one sometime. Do you have any suggestions for good ones? πŸ™‚

          1. Thanks dear! πŸ™‚ Also you’re welcome. XD Aha, no, I was thinking about portrait photography and business and courses on those sorts of things. πŸ™‚ Yes, I took Amy and Jordan’s courses and they were SUPERB! I can’t give them enough praise. Super thorough, super easy to understand and SO applicable. They are so great when you’re starting out! The courses are here. Besides, they’re the cutest couple. πŸ˜€

p.s. i absolutely love the beach, and we go a few times a year, so its unthinkable for me to have not gone for YEARS its just too horrifying. XD

p.s.s. i never make summer goals because 1, i’m lazy, and i like the idea of relaxing all summer, 2, i’m gonna end up doing a ton of stuff anyway, and 3, why have plans to complete a few things when i can work on half a million thing and get them all a little closer to being finished, as well as start some new ones? i know. i can’t stand myself either. XD

  13. Your summer goals list sounds amazing! We live in Canada, so our school doesn’t let out till June 21, and then we head back to school in September. Maybe I’ll make a summer goals list.
I have so many songs for you to listen to. I’d try Hollyn (Love Like You Loved, Alone) or For King and Country, or TobyMac (Till the Day I Die, This is Not a Test, Speak Life, I Need U, the list goes on and on) or MercyMe (Grace Got You)
Those are all my favorite songs and I listen to them non-stop when I’m writing. Good luck on your novel! I hope you win Camp.
Speaking of which, do you want to go in a Cabin with me? I’d love to be in Cabin this time. I wasn’t last time.

I totally understand the struggle of not having a schedule! It’s just agghhhh! I saw some of your clipart and it’s great! Maybe you could create dividers or flowers and such? I really enjoyed reading Counting by 7s! I haven’t read the others but I’m sure they’re great! You should definitely get a copy. I hope you get the new camera and pass your driving test! And you want to start a photography business!? That’s AMAZING! I bet it’s going to be awesome! Good luck with all your goals! xx
