Whoa, that’s a lot of randomness. I don’t expect you to actually click all of those links. XD Without further ado, let the 15th random post begin!

Random Topic #1: Succulent Sorrows

Does anyone remember when I introduced my new aloe plant, Leo, in my last random post?

Yeah… the poor fellow has since perished. He was quite a lovely plant while he lasted. :’D So that’s the bad news. The good news is… I got a new succulent! I’M TRYING MY HARDEST NOT TO KILL HER. Introducing Lizzie:

Isn’t she so wonderfully spiky? Her name is from a book called Lizzie Bright and the Buckminister Boy. Strange title, but excellent book. Speaking of books, the next random topic is….

Random Topic #2: The Best Books I’ve Read This Year

Just like last year, I’ve set a Goodreads goal to read 100 books in 2019. My current count is 32 books. I thought I’d share a list of some of the best books I’ve read this year. In no particular order, here they are:

I highly recommend checking all of those out! Yes, there are three Kate DiCamillo books up there. One of which is a picture book. XD Hey, look, another perfect transition into the next random topic… Kate DiCamillo!

Random Topic #3: Writing to Kate DiCamillo

I shall now tell you a small story. In 2018, I read several of Kate DiCamillo’s books and she quickly became one of my favorite authors. After stalking her on Facebook for a while (seriously… I read every post all the way back to 2010), I decided to send her a letter and see if she would reply. I wrote a letter that was basically a big ramble about how much I loved her books, added a packet of flower seeds, and sent it off. AND SHE REPLIED! I was in Minnesota when the note came – my mom sent me a photo of the envelope and I shrieked with excitement in the middle a crowd of people. XD That flight back home was one of the longest days of my life. O_O

When I finally got home and read the note, it was well worth the wait. It was such a wonderful reply – it made me so happy! In my letter, I asked her if she had any writing advice for me, and I mentioned her writing advice to write two pages a day. Here’s what she wrote to me:

Dear Clara,
Thank you for believing in the power of stories. I hope you will keep reading. Your friend, Kate DiCamillo.
P.S: Thank you for your beautiful letter. And for the flower seeds… SPRING! Yes, 2 pages a day. And also: don’t give up.

*happy sigh* I may or may not have her note framed on the wall above my desk. Actually, I most definitely do. Here’s a photo for proof:

Look at that amazing messy author-ly handwriting. I’ll treasure that note forever. πŸ˜€ Who’s your favorite author? Have you ever written them a letter?

Random Topic #4: Music I’m Enjoying

I shared some of my current favorite songs in this post, but my favorites have already changed. XD So here’s a playlist of my current favorite songs for your enjoyment! (All links lead to YouTube.)

WONDERFUL FEELING // Switchfoot

Happy If You Could (Demo) // NEEDTOBREATHE

Family // Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors

This Town Still Talks About You // Natalie Hemby

The Bird & The Rifle // Lori McKenna

Young and Angry Again // Lori McKenna

I’d love to hear what you’re currently listening to in the comments below! πŸ™‚

Random Topic #5: A Blog You Should Follow

Today’s blog is one that most of you probably recognize if you’re not super new to blogging….

Life Undefeated!

Madi has been on hiatus since June of last year, but SHE’S BACK AS OF TODAY! πŸ˜€ πŸŽ‰ I highly suggest that you all go visit her blog and welcome her back to the blogosphere. πŸ™‚ She puts a ton of work into her posts, and they’re always super well done! *points to link* BEGONE. Except please don’t actually leave because you’re not done reading my post. *hopeful smile* XD

Random Topic #6: DIY Stickers

Here’s something fun that I recently learned how to make – packaging tape stickers! There are a bazillion tutorials for this on the Internet, so I won’t go into too much detail, but I thought it would be neat to show you how I used this method to decorate the cover of my journal. πŸ™‚

The supplies you need are packaging tape, the printed image you want to use, and a bowl of warm water.

First, cover your image completely in packaging tape.

Next, put your tape-covered image into the bowl of warm water for 10 minutes. This is where the magic happens – the ink is transferred to the tape!

When the 10 minutes are up, carefully rub away the paper and you’ll be left with a sticker. I used this method to decorate my new journal:

Pretty neat, huh? πŸ˜€ Have you ever tried this before?

Random Topic #7: Shelter Pets

I finally got a chance to go back to the animal shelter and take more photos! This was the first time I’ve gone with my new camera, and it made the process so much easier. I thought you guys might appreciate some of the cuteness I captured, so without further ado, here you go. πŸ˜€

There’s a new outdoor enclosure for the cats, and it made them so much easier to photograph!

LOOK AT THOSE EYES. He looks like he’s part owl. XD

This is Atlas, who I really wanted to steal. *hugs him*

This is Captain. He was absolutely massive! He’s since been adopted. πŸ™‚

I hope you enjoyed those photos! I love being able to help out the shelter, and being around dogs all day is pretty great too. XD Which animal was your favorite?

Random Topic #8: Important May Holidays

It’s pretty much become a tradition to share the strange holidays of the month in my random posts, so here you go. πŸ˜€

May 13th – National Apple Pie Day
May 14th – National Dance Like a Chicken Day
May 15th – National Chocolate Chip Day
May 17th – National Bike to Work Day
May 18th – National No Dirty Dishes Day
May 19th – National Take Your Parents to the Playground Day
May 20th – National Rescue Dog Day
May 22nd – National Buy a Musical Instrument Day
May 29th – National Paperclip Day
May 31st – National Smile Day

I think May 14th and May 19th are my favorites. XD Are you going to celebrate any of these lovely holidays?

Random Topic #9: Poetry

I shared a couple of recent poems in this post, and today I have two more to share! I’d love to hear what you think of them. πŸ™‚

I wrote this first one after a particularly beautiful summer night. πŸ˜€

I came up with this next one while listening to Apollo 11, an amazing instrumental album by Adam Young. The idea of going to the moon has always been incredible to me, and that’s what I tried to capture.

I hope those were somewhat interesting! πŸ™‚ Which was your favorite? Would you want to go to the moon if you were given the chance?

Whew! 1,275 words! Thanks for sticking around to the end. πŸ˜€ I’d love to hear what’s been going on in your life – what have you been reading? Current favorite songs? What have you been learning recently? πŸ™‚

Have a wonderful day!

Which random topic was your favorite?

  6. Aww poor Leo :(( Hope Lizzie has better luck! Oh my goodness, how cool that you got a letter back from Kate! Writing to authors is something I want to do more often. Yayy I’m so excited that Maddy is back!! THE ORANGE KITTY 😍Great pictures. I love your poems (can’t choose one) :DD insert opportunity to rant about book I’m reading So I’m reading As You Wish by Cary Elwis, the dude who acted Westley in the Princess Bride. (not sure if you’re a princess bride fan or not, let me know 😜) Anyhow, it’s all about the behind the scenes of the movie, and it’s so well written! He has a super casual and easy-to-read style that makes me want to devour the whole thing, even though I don’t usually read non-fic. I’m listening to lots of Broadway musicals and Why Don’t We right now, what about you?

    1. Oh dear, poor Leo. 😦 I knooow, succulents are so hard. I’ve found it seems to help if you water them every other week instead of every week. And some that we got from Costco say to water them every SIX weeks. O.o Best wishes for keeping the lovely Lizzie alive! XD
    2. YAY! BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS! Some of those are on my favorites list too! Now I shall have to modify my TBR. πŸ˜‰
